Self Catering in Newton Abbot

The bustling market town of Newton Abbot sits at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park and is the main road and rail junction for the coastal resorts of South Devon. The two former communities of Newton Bushel and Newton Abbot ( or ‘New town of the Abbot’ as it was originally named ) were only finally amalgamated into one town as recently as the early twentieth century, giving us the Newton Abbot that we recognise today.  The coming of the Great Western Railway finally put Newton Abbot on the map for good, making it one of the principal trading outposts in the South West.

Today, Newton Abbot is as busy as ever, with it’s weekly produce and cattle market, it’s regular car boot sales and an abundance of national superstores and fashion outlets which lie on the outskirts of the town.  Such a busy town obviously has an ample quota of pubs, hotels, restaurants and cafes, and also a cinema. Several of Newton Abbot's friendly pubs feature live entertainment and karaoke throughout the year, and a visit to the local Tuckers Maltings where visitors are able to sample the various brews made on the premises, is possibly another to get everyone in a singing frame of mind.

But there is also peace and tranquility in Newton Abbot, with it’s many parks and open spaces, of which Decoy Country Park is one not to miss.  There is even Prickly Ball Farm Hospital for Hedgehogs who are feeling a little down in the mouth.  Here you can help feed the hedgehogs and explore the wildlife garden.

Newton Abbot has plenty to offer everyone.  An excellent family attraction can be found at the nearby House of Marbles and Teign Valley Glass Studio in Bovey Tracey, where you can watch craftsmen skilfully blowing glass, tour the marble museum, and visit the gift shop, all before enjoying a ‘cuppa’ in their cafeteria. Just a stones throw away is the unique Cardew Tea Pottery, where young and old alike are encouraged to try their hand at pottery, from fashioning your masterpiece in clay, to decorating it with your own original design. And there are hundreds of exquisite teapots available for purchase for a ’brew-up’ if you don’t fancy a nice cup of tea in the pottery’s own licensed restaurant.  Meanwhile, just a short drive up the pretty Teign Valley is another children's favourite, Becky Falls woodland adventure playground, with animals, puppets, woodland trails - and lots of water!

The Rock Climbing & Caving Centre offers qualified instruction to all who would like to experience the thrill rock climbing, even under 18's!  Slower paced attractions in Newton Abbot include Orchid Paradise - an cool indoor garden with beautiful displays, Plant World - with rare and exotic plants on display, and The Rock-Garden Caves & Nursery - set in the grounds of an old Quarry.  The Illuminated Cave is a must see!

There is also the Newton Abbot Town & GWR Museum where you can learn both about the towns history, and its important connection with the traditional age of steam, via the Great Western Railway.  And finally, for shoppers and family alike, there is the Trago Mills out of town shopping centre & leisure park, with free parking, children’s rides, a miniature steam railway, and Trago Mills peacocks!

Last but not least, why not visit the famous Newton Abbot Racecourse, and who knows, perhaps a shrewd investment here could see the holiday in Devon paid for already!
