The inspirational and artistic town of Totnes can be found in the beautiful surroundings of the South Hams, an area noted for its 'outstanding natural beauty'. A Market town with its roots stretching back deep into the past, Totnes is one of the oldest boroughs in England. This also means that Totnes is a place where the visitors are never short of things to do, or places to visit.
One time home to the famous Dartington Hall School, who's ethos still lives on in the guise of Dartington Hall Trust promoting studies of the arts, Totnes also has a selection of local museums, an ancient Guildhall, and of course the delightful Steamer Quay, converted from what used to be a bustling river port in times gone by. Totnes even has a Norman Castle!
The foot of the town touches the Dart riverside, where the popular Steam Packet Inn and the picturesque Totnes Steamer Quay are located. Frequent and pleasurable river cruises to local Dartmouth, about 7 miles downstream, run from the quay during the summer.
Working your way up through the town, passing the Royal Seven Stars hotel and restaurant, will take you through many characteristic narrow streets, lined with quaint and quirky cafes and pubs, plus many varied and unusual shops, selling excellent local produce, some entirely organic as at Riverford Farm, as well as the more traditional items. And how about a spot of wine tasting after a touring the vineyard at nearby Sharpham Estate?
At very the top of Totnes is the castle which stands guard over the whole town. Although a particular point of interest for historians, it is just as impressive to the casual visitor, with its circular construction looking almost as though it has been made to measure, and then dropped into the hill on which it sits proudly.
With both Dartmoor, and the many beaches
of South Devon equally within easy reach, Totnes is a location that truly
suits all types of holidaying types. Added to this are the many yearly
events, such as Totnes Open Houses and Studios Event, Ways
With Words Literature Festival, Totnes & District Agricultural
Show, Totnes Carnival Week, and the Totnes Orange Race, making Totnes a truly
unique and wonderful place.
