The bustling market town of Tiverton is situated roughly in the middle of Devon on the banks of the river Exe. The name Tiverton is derived from old name of Twyfordtown, or town of the two fords,( the second river being the smaller river Lowman ) and much of Tiverton's past was linked to these very rivers, firstly through the wool industry, and more recently through lace-making, which is still carried on in Tiverton today.
The modern town of Tiverton still hosts various events and carnivals throughout the year, and the largest of these is the annual Mid Devon Show, where visitors are able to savour all the sights, sounds and tastes of the westcountry.
Tiverton's busy restaurants, pubs, and bars provide plenty of relaxation in the evening , whilst all the usual high street names are on hand for shopping expeditions and re-stocking supplies during the day, making Tiverton an ideal base from which to tour the best of the westcountry, from the rugged beauty of Dartmoor to the west and the scenic beauty of Exmoor to the east.
Tiverton also has a cinema and an excellent local museum, not to mention the 'ghostly' Tiverton Castle where adventurous 'kids' can even try on a suit of armour if they fancy. And as a special treat for the little and 'big kids' in the family, why not go for some 'off-road' fun at Diggerland, or the award winning Quad World, both just a few minutes 'on road' drive away!
Also just outside Tiverton, Bickleigh Mill provides Mid Devon's largest rural shopping, recreation and eating complex, which is always worth a visit, whilst back in the town itself, the delights of the Devon Railway Centre and the Grand Western Canal with its horse drawn barges offer a sample of life at a slower pace and further proof of why Tiverton is a town not to be missed on your visit to the westcountry.
