Teignmouth

The popular seaside town of Teignmouth sits as it's name implies, at the mouth of the River Teign in South Devon.  Sheltered by hills on three sides, the original tiny fishing village of Teignmouth gradually grew into a busy port exporting granite from Dartmoor and Clay from the lower Teign Valley before being becoming a fashionable Georgian heath spa, which the inventive Victorians expanded upon, until it finally became the bustling Teignmouth that we know today.

The are many memorable sights to delight visitors to Teignmouth, from the famous Ness Point, an impressive sandstone rock face sculptured by nature, which dominates the town from across the River Teign in Shaldon, to the graceful sweeping curves of the Brunel's spectacular railway line, which snakes around the East Cliff, perched precariously on the sea wall just a few feet above sea level, before it disappears into the red sandstone itself at Holcombe tunnel.

Teignmouth is all about holidays and relaxation, and it's long sandy beach enjoys record breaking hours of sunshine, providing yet another reason why Teignmouth is so popular with bathers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

Just yards from the beach, the level town centre offers all manner of amenities and attractions, such as the Carlton Theatre, whose amateur cast puts on regular shows throughout the summer and a pantomime at Christmas, and a visit to the town's museum will transport you back to the spine-chilling days of shipwrecks and invasions by the marauding French, who virtually destroyed the eastern side of Teignmouth in 1690.  Computer buffs will probably need no reminding by the museum that William Babbage, the acknowledged inventor of 'the first computer', also lived in Teignmouth for many years.

Teignmouth also has an abundance of good restaurants and cafes, such as The Owl and the Pussycat, or the unique Minidab.  And of course, being a fishing port and harbour town, there are some excellent inns and pubs. The rambling Cockhaven Manor, where you can enjoy a quite meal and relax in olde worlde charm in nearby Bishopsteignton, is one such example.  Several of the other local pubs offer live entertainment on some evenings, plus the occasional jazz band on a Sunday lunchtime. Teignmouth is also the home of Internationally famous rock band Muse, so rest assured, talent is not in short supply around these parts.

If you're looking for a friendly self-catering holiday base in a small but lively town, on level ground, with good road and rail communications, not to mention an excellent beach which enjoys more hours of sunshine than most, Teignmouth is an excellent place to start.
