The picturesque South Devon seaside town of Dawlish is probably best known for Brunel's magnificent pioneering railway line and it's ornate station which virtually 'hangs out' over the sea, and for the graceful black swans who inhabit 'Dawlish Water'. Dawlish Water, for the uninitiated, is a tranquil brook which runs through a lovely park known as 'The Lawn' in the heart of the Dawlish town, and so symbolic and full of legend are the black swans, that they actually form part of the Dawlish Town Council coat of arms.
Not surprisingly, the town of Dawlish, with it's plentiful shops, cafes, inns, restaurants and theatre, huddles quaintly around The Lawn, and in doing so it provides every amenity that holidaymakers could wish for, and all within walking distance.
Dawlish is also a popular retreat for those seeking a romantic break, 'far from the madding crowd', some of whom have even been rumoured to 'tie the knot' at nearby Powderham Castle, which hosts a variety of concerts and other events throughout the year.
Just a few minutes drive from Dawlish town centre, is Dawlish Warren, the 'other half' of Dawlish. Dawlish Warren boasts sweeping sand dunes, an extensive Nature Reserve, a safe beach for the kids and an exciting go kart track for the 'bigger kids'.
Other outdoor pursuits, such as paintballing, shooting and archery are available at various local activity centres, such as Ashcombe Activities in nearby Ashcombe.
More excitement and spectacle can be found in Dawlish town itself during Carnival Week, when attractions, such as a funfair and The Red Arrows are laid on to thrill and impress, and to make a holiday in Dawlish even more memorable.
So, for a relaxed, family friendly yet not too quiet self catering holiday base, that's within easy reach of South Devon's many excellent attractions, Dawlish is well worth a second look.
